Lalita is part of Fincas Mierisch, a family of 4th and 5th generation coffee producers from Nicaragua that made the jump into Honduras in late 2011. It is connected to their other two farms in Honduras: Cerro Azul and Santa Lucia. Each farm is dependent on each other as they have the wet mill and greenhouse with raised beds in Santa Lucia and the cupping lab, warehouse, and some drying patios located in Cerro Azul. By connected, it means they’re a couple of minutes by vehicle from each other so it is very easy to move in between them. Lalita has good altitude, with most of its coffee plots being shade-grown. It receives quite a bit of rainfall, and its silty clay soil helps boost the nutrient and water retention capabilities of the soil.
Fincas Mierisch has been producing coffee in Nicaragua since 1908, with Bruno Mierisch Boettiger (a German immigrant) being the first in our family to produce coffee. It was my father, Erwin J. Mierisch while being a head judge for Cup of Excellence Honduras 2011 that decided to take the risk and buy a farm in the country. His experience in the competition really opened his eyes to the great potential Honduran coffee had, because at the time it wasn’t noticed for specialty quality coffee. Since 2016, the task of running the farms in Honduras has fallen to an aunt, Eleane Mierisch, also a COE head judge. Her leadership and knowledge have propelled farms to new heights, culminating in a 1st Place victory in Cup of Excellence Honduras 2019 with a Gesha Washed from Santa Lucia. Erwin “Doc” Mierisch, an OB-GYN by profession, is still active with his attention paid to coffee trees health and development.
