Matt Warshaw knows more about surfing than any other person on the planet, as evidenced by The History of Surfing, Warshaw's definitive take on the sport. Now, he has honed that book into an abridged and excerpted edition for surfers everywhere. Each spread features a micro essay alongside an image capturing a slice of surf history, from Kelly Slater and the invention of the thruster to shark attacks and localism. Packaged in a small and chunky hardcover, A Brief History of Surfing deftly defines surf culture in an entertaining and irresistible volume with wide appeal.

The source of the photographs in A Spiritual Good Time is from various surfing magazines published before 1990. The appropriated images from mass-printed surf culture is a meditation on the perpetual pursuit of pleasure. It is a blending of fear and desire within a sport that often focused on the heterosexual gaze, hyper-masculinity, localism and the gossamer tipped dream of all inclusiveness and spirituality. Through tight cropping and editing of the editorial tropes of surf photography, the images are re-contextualized into a loose narrative of the contradictory forces at play.

Stephen Milner is an artist working in sculpture, photography, video and installation. He received his BFA in photography in 2013 from the Savannah College of Art and Design and his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Oregon where he was a Graduate Teaching Fellowship from 2015 to 2018. His work has been published online and in print by magazines like The Brooklyn Rail, ItsNiceThat! Collective Quarterly, Oxford American, PDN, Time, iGnant, Juxtapoz, Boooooom!, Humble Arts Foundation among many others.

AFROSURF is the first book to capture and celebrate the surf and related street cultures of Africa. This unprecedented collection is compiled by Mami Wata, an African surf company that aims to connect the world to the power of African surf.

Mami Wata brings together its co-founder Selema Masekela and some of Africa's finest photographers, thinkers, writers, and surfers to explore the unique culture of eighteen coastal countries, from Morocco to Somalia, Mozambique, South Africa, and beyond. Packed with over 200 photos and fifty essays, AFROSURF features profiles, thought pieces, poems, playlists, photos, illustrations, ephemera, recipes, and a mini-comic, all wrapped in an astounding design that captures the diversity and character of Africa.

Mami Wata will be donating all profits from the book to two African surf therapy organizations, Waves For Change and Surfers Not Street Children.

Beneath the Surface is Lucas Murnaghan's photo book debut and is the culmination of two years of underwater exploration.  Totalling 100 pages, the book includes a foreword by Alan Cumming, preface by the author, personal responses by collaborators and 70 curated images.  Each limited edition of 500 11" x 9" hardcover Smyth sewn bound book is series. 

 

 

Distant Shores is from the award-winner photographer Chris Burkard. Hey guys! We're Taylor and Steph Bode. In early 2013, we set out on an adventure to find land in California where we could build an Earthship-inspired cabin for ourselves. We had been studying Earthships in Taos, NM and made it our mission to build a self-sufficient house, live off-the-grid in the woods, and experience the simple life. We got our opportunity in the Santa Cruz Mountains and have now created this photobook, Nomadic Roots, to share our story. We built our house for under $10k.
